Horse Therapy! Register and Volunteer with NOTRA this Spring.

Calling all Riders and Volunteers!

For over 35 years the North Okanagan Therapeutic Riding Association, NOTRA, has been providing a safe and fun place for people of all abilities and ages to experience the profound effect of equine therapy in their daily life. Based out of the O’Keefe Historic Ranch, we offer seasonal lessons as a mental, physical and recreational activity for children and adults with diverse disabilities.

Therapeutic riding has long been known to benefit those with special needs or mental illness, but only more recently has research solidified our understanding of the impact horses can have on our mental and physical well-being. ASD and ADHD research has shown speech, behaviour and cognitive improvements from equine therapy. Similar research of those with physical disabilities showed that participants gained significant improvements in their physical abilities and mental well-being through horseback riding. It’s been shown to improve range-of-motion, balance, posture and hand-eye coordination. Of course, it’s also a fun and rewarding activity for everyone involved!

Each Spring and Fall NOTRA sees upwards of 100 riders on a weekly basis for an 8 week program. During a rider’s lesson they get the wonderful support of trained volunteers and instructors who guide them every step of the way. It truly is a special place where people of all ages and abilities get to experience the many benefits of therapeutic riding.

For those struggling with anxiety, depression or isolation, NOTRA is launching a new program called Hug A Horse! This program is aimed at improving mental health and wellness. Through the immediate feedback and mirroring provided by a horse, there is a deep sense of self awareness and insight in a non judgmental and emotionally safe space. These are one time visits at the ranch that allow you to connect with horses, nature and yourself!

New riders are always welcome, and with the Spring Sessions about to start up, this is the perfect time to try something new and see the many benefits of therapeutic riding. The deadline to register for the upcoming Spring session is March 31, 2022. You can find all the information about their programs and upcoming lessons at https://notra1984.ca/programs .

NOTRA would not be what it is, however, without the amazing support of the community around it, and the fantastic volunteers who give countless hours to providing a safe and fun atmosphere for everyone

Volunteers are always welcomed and there is a strong sense of community and friendship among both those who have been there for many years, and the new faces they add each season. If volunteering is something you’ve been wanting to do, head to our website for more information on how to become a part of this wonderful association and make a lasting impact on children and adults with disabilities.

If you’re a business, organization or member of the community that’s in a position to help further the fantastic and heartfelt work that NOTRA is doing, we would also love to talk with you about sponsorship opportunities.
