Through the Window Photography

Social distancing. Kinda makes you contemplate a day in the life of your beloved aquarium critter doesn’t it? The affectionate brushing against the glass, the meal service dropped through a side door, the exchange of non-verbal communication (such as body language and interpretive dance)… c’mon, we’re all getting creative at this point. I put on lipstick to wave at the recycling turck this morning.

Local lifestyle photographer Yana Crane is up for the challenge with her new project ‘Through The Window, families in self-isolation’ and her photos are beautiful!

“I have always loved documentary photography and think it is a very important form of art. Also, I'm a storyteller and try to find a narrative by observing people, their behaviour and their reactions. I’ve wanted to be a physiologist since I was 13 years old.”

“So with all that, when I became a photographer, I dreamed about telling important stories or to help in some way with my photographs (such as a women’s empowerment project I had in my head for a while, but it is hard to find models in Vernon).”

“When all this lock-down happened I started to see how hard it was for many people to not be social, to deal with their kids all day long, or be alone in the house... and I thought it would be an interesting project -to photograph how each family is cooping with what's happening for them during this time of social isolation.”

“Each one is just a micro photo shoot, as you can get only so much in 10-15 minutes through a window or on a balcony. And all together, different stories can fall into one big story -a memory of that time in history. I have a genuine interest in people as each one of us is unique and like a new book (I love to read). So for me this is an unfolding to discover and find that bigger story of the family. How they spend time? How they feel? What do they do with kids? How they treat themselves and each other. Etc, etc, etc. Especially in a time when the world has come to an almost stop.”

“From the family’s point of view this is an extreme experience - lot's of worries for some, or good opportunities to bond for others. It is important to remember these times, and later when looking at the photos, it will touch something in your heart and bring special feelings. This happens to me when I look at historical and iconic photos from the past. Some of them tell incredible stories about an era, people, events or just casual life. I'm not that vainglorious about my project, this is smaller-scale.. a little keepsake of the time were we all happened to be in the same boat.”

You do not need to clean your house, do your hair or strike a pose. Yana’s photos are real, and raw, and a beautiful representation of who truly you are.
